Chemical & Process Industries

From chemicals to biotechnology, North East Lincolnshire is at the centre of a major concentration of process industries, which in the wider Humber region employs around 20,000 people in 400 companies.

North East Lincolnshire is part of the second largest chemical cluster in the UK.

The process industries sector is incredibly diverse and include petrochemicals; commodity and speciality chemicals; composite materials and pigments & paints.

The cluster in North East Lincolnshire continues to attract global players from the chemical, pharmaceutical and allied industries. Major players locally include:

  • Solenis – operators of a 36-acre manufacturing facility in Grimsby. The plant, which began manufacturing in 1995, initially made superabsorbents, and now produces polymers and flocculants mainly for the mineral processing industries.
  • Tronox – Saudi-owned chemicals company, the Immingham site is the is world’s second largest producer of Titanium Dioxide.
  • BOC – provides gases to industry with a state of the art Acetylene production facility
  • Lenzing Fibers – the company’s only UK site, manufacturing fibres.
  • and also, a little further along the south Humber bank, Phillips66 – US energy giant that operates the Humber Refinery

World-class refining

The Humber Refinery is one of the most sophisticated in Europe. It is a fully integrated plant that produces light products and fuel oil. It is the only coking refinery in the UK, the world’s largest producer of speciality graphite cokes and the largest anode coke producer in Europe.

Proven supply chain

All around North East Lincolnshire, there are hundreds of specialist construction, engineering, logistics and many other service companies that provide a vital supply-chain to the major manufacturers in the process industries.

HCF Catch Ltd

HCF Catch Ltd is an industry led partnership supporting the process, energy and renewable industries in the Humber region.

It supports the development of the £6 billion Humber chemicals industry and now has members and partners drawn from across the process, energy and renewable sectors, their associated supply chains, and local, regional and national government.

Skills for tomorrow

CATCH, the Centre for the Assessment of Technical Competence – Humber, is a unique £8 million training facility for the process industries. It is able to simulate authentic environments for training and development without the associated risks of handling potentially dangerous substances at high temperatures and pressures.

Materials of the future

The growth in advanced materials and composites is a major opportunity for the process industries in the Grimsby area. This has particular significance given our major role as a key hub location for renewable energy, in particular offshore wind energy.
