Corporation Road Bridge update… and see the latest drone footage!

10:50 am, Tuesday, 12th September 2023

The essential heritage restoration works at Corporation Road Bridge, which will preserve the structure for future generations, is progressing.

50 steel deck plates on Corporation Road Bridge have now been replaced, a further 10 were lifted for a more detailed inspection and the results showed they can be reused. Many of the plates have now been permanently refixed.

Grit blasting works to the main structure, substructure and hand railings of the first span of the bridge are still underway. Further detailed inspections to the handrails have been carried out and repairs to these have now been requested before work progresses further in this area.

A recent closure of the footpath on the bridge took place on Saturday 9 September between 9am and 4pm and Sunday 10 September between 10am and 4pm. This was to allow grit blasting work to be carried out beneath the footpath. Further short duration footpath closures will be needed as the work progresses and updates on this will be provided in due course. Temporary signs will be erected.

As part of the overall works, initial inspections of the underdeck of the bridge have been carried out, and this has revealed much poorer conditions than originally expected. More extensive assessments and inspections are underway to confirm the extent of the damage.

As with any work on old structures, work will be tailored throughout the programme based on the conditions found after each survey and assessment, and bespoke replacement parts will need to be made and ordered where necessary to match the original construction. This makes the programme more complex and less predictable compared to works on modern structures.

North East Lincolnshire Council, its delivery partner, Equans and contractor Spencer Group would like to thank the public for their patience whilst the work is being undertaken.
