Cleethorpes Market Place

Market Square acts as a link between St Peter’s Avenue, and the pier and promenade. It has the bones of a traditional market square, but this has been lost, with its primary use currently being a car park.

The Square has the potential to become a vibrant public space, with weekly markets and alfresco dining. Rejuvenating it adds space for social interaction, reconnecting our busy seafront and town centre, creating jobs, and boosting the economy.

This project will provide a safer, healthier, more pleasant environment for pedestrians, encouraging a circular route from the seafront through the Market Place, to the town centre.

This scheme proposes major improvements to the square and reintroduction of a functioning historic marketplace.

North East Lincolnshire Council has been awarded £18.4m of Levelling Up Funding (LUF) to transform Cleethorpes seafront: regenerating Pier Gardens reintroducing the historic Market Place and delivering a multi-use, tourism-focused landmark building on Sea Road. The three projects will enhance key assets that support the whole community, creating opportunities, and making it more attractive to a broader selection of local people.

Traffic will be controlled limiting, access to maintenance and emergency vehicles and event set up.

Changes to parking

After administering a parking survey with the residents of North East Lincolnshire, we know that the Market Place is a popular car parking area for people who are visiting Cleethorpes.

In order to support the change, it’s proposed to create a new public car park behind the Old Vic Public House just a few minutes’ walk from Market Place, introduce short stay only parking within the existing High Street Car Park, and look at existing parking bays on Osborne and Cross Streets to make sure there’s the right mix of parking, loading and drop off opportunities to meet business and resident needs. Resident parking permits could also be implemented on the streets that lead into Market Place to make sure residents weren’t displaced.
